Staff Reporter :
Female births have outnumbered male births in Nagpur, according to information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act by activist Abhay Kolarkar from the Health Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The data, covering the period from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2025, indicates an unusual demographic trend in the city where the number of girl children born exceeded that of boys.
According to the RTI reply, the city recorded 18,040 female births in 2023 compared to 17,347 male births. The trend continued in subsequent years as well. In 2024, Nagpur registered 16,577 female births and 12,233 male births. Overall, the figures suggest a favourable sex ratio during the period reviewed in the RTI response.
The information provided by the civic body also reveals considerable fluctuations in the number of births recorded over the three years. While thousands of births were reported annually, the total number of births rose significantly in 2025, when 21,801 births were registered in the city.
The RTI data also highlights the number of child deaths recorded during the same period. According to the figures, 9,475 child deaths were reported in 2023. The number rose sharply to 17,164 in 2024 before declining to 12,062 in 2025. The data includes gender-wise mortality figures, with thousands of deaths recorded among both male and female children during the period.
Infant mortality and stillbirth figures were also part of the information provided by the NMC.
The data indicates that a total of 21,127 infant deaths were recorded, along with 61 stillbirths and 152 infant deaths reported during the period covered in the RTI application.
The RTI response also revealed gaps in health data maintained by the civic administration. Information regarding the number of children born with heart-related problems and the number of surgeries performed on such children was not available with the department.
In addition, the civic body stated that 38 child deaths due to various diseases were recorded in 2025, while year-wise data for previous years was not available.
The reply also includes information about births and deaths in municipal hospitals. In 2024, civic hospitals recorded 176 female births and 186 male births, with 100 deaths reported. In 2025, the hospitals registered 340 female births and 136 male births, while 342 deaths were recorded.
