- Institution of Engineers with BSIL design curriculum with trained faculties
- Cotton producers get new ray of hope, open the door for research
Institution of Engineers (India) in association with Bajaj Steel Industries Limited (BSIL) initiated industry-powered ginning technology course. This three-semester course is designed by BSIL and IEI. This initiative will not only help in generating employment but open the door for research and development and startup too.
With global expansion of ginning technology, BSIL, Nagpur has acquired Technology Continental Eagle Corporation since a decade or so ago and now supplying all ginning technologies to the entire world. Apart from India, the demand for ginning engineers has increased and overseas ginners require skilled engineers.
The industry is operating in ginning machines almost in 25 countries in the world and all of them have footfall of skilled engineers in this domain. BSIL took initiative in this direction and sponsored a pilot project, which was started in 2018 at GTC Cotton Research Institute CIRCOT Nagpur.
Shri Sai College of Engineering and Technology, Bhadrawati took initiative and joined the pilot project of 30 students from mechanical and electrical engineering. On successful completion of training, 15 students from the batch of 30 got placement at BSIL. After a few months of training, most of them were deputed to overseas ginning and pressing factories.
Dr Gajanan K Awari along with Dr Rakesh Shrivastava and Dr J F Agrawal pointed out that AICTE has asked autonomous institutes to start industry-powered courses in engineering colleges. Further, they elaborated that ginning technology course can be initiated in engineering colleges for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering students.
Dr Awari explained, “We chose Tulsiramji Gaikwad-Patil College of Engineering and G H Raisoni College of Engineering to run the Ginning technology course. Both colleges are autonomous and can run the course. The first batch began from January, 2026. They will have last three semesters -- 6, 7 and 8 with last semester to be treated as industry internship at BSIL.”
Government to be approached
The course has several dimensions. It is important with regard to the presence of cotton in this part of the State. Institution of Engineers and BSIL are mulling over approaching Government to start the course elsewhere in State. As per National Education Policy (NEP), this course is one of the minor subjects and they will get credit points too.
