Nagpur has emerged as the third-richest district in Maharashtra in terms of per capita income, highlighting the city’s strong economic position even as sharp disparities continue across the Vidarbha region, according to the Economic Survey of Maharashtra 2025-26.
As per the the survey, the per capita income for the district stands at Rs 3.67 lakh, making it third in the list of the richest district in the State. Mumbai city ranks first with a per capita income of about Rs 6.85 lakh, followed by Mumbai Suburban at roughly Rs 4.96 lakh. Interestingly, Nagpur features ahead of Pune district, a major destination for ‘Nagpurkars’ searching for high paying jobs, which ranks fourth with approximately Rs 3.58 lakh per capita income, reflecting the concentration of economic activity in major urban centres.

Despite Nagpur’s strong performance, several neighbouring districts in Vidarbha continue to record significantly lower income levels, pointing to persistent regional inequality within the state.
Data presented in the Economic Survey indicates that Gadchiroli remains among the lowest-income districts in Maharashtra, with a per capita income of roughly Rs 1.56 lakh, less than half that of Nagpur. Other districts in eastern Vidarbha also remain below the State average, reflecting their continued dependence on agriculture, forest resources and mining rather than diversified urban economies.
