Expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of the Kharun river, leaders of Johar Chhattisgarh Party (JCP) and Chhattisgarhiya Yuva Kranti Sena (CYKS) alleged that several stretches of the river near Raipur have been choked with water hyacinth while untreated sewage is flowing directly into the river.

The issue was raised during a joint meeting of the two organisations held in Raipur to review organisational activities and discuss preparations for the upcoming Birgaon Municipal Corporation elections. According to party leaders, the spread of water hyacinth in several river stretches has created problems for villagers living along the banksand has also affected small fish farmers and boat operators, particularly around Mahadev Ghat.

JCP Raipur Vice-President Richa Verma said the deteriorating condition of the river has begun to affect daily use of river water and livelihoods dependent on it. CYKS district convenor Rahul Verma claimed that eight sewage treatment plants proposed for the Kharun river have not yet been fully established and some plants being operated through private agencies remain non-functional. Members further alleged that sewage from drainage channels is entering the river, leading to the formation of chemical foam on the surface.

During the meeting, chaired by JCP State Vice-President and party spokesperson Chandrakant Yadu, office-bearers also discussed strengthening organisational activities and expanding the membership drive. JCP Raipur district president Gopi Sahu urged workers to actively participate in the campaign and announced the appointment of Nikesh as president of Ward No. 60 Shaheed
