In a major drive to prevent road accidents during the Holi celebrations, the city traffic police intensified enforcement under Operation U-Turn and took action against thousands of traffic violators. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani said, nakabandi was set up at more than 100 locations across the city on March 2 and 3. During the two-day special drive, police booked 205 drunk drivers and took action against a total of 3,921 motorists for various traffic violations. “We had deployed additional teams and established extensive checking points to ensure public safety during the festive period,” said DCP Lohit Matani.
 
“Strict action was taken against those found driving under the influence of alcohol.” Under Operation U-Turn, the highest number of drunk driving cases (30) were reported in Pardi Division. MIDC and Sonegaon recorded 20 cases each, followed by Sitabuldi (12), Sadar (22), Cotton Market (11), Lakadganj (27), Ajni (17), Indora (16), Sakkardara (11), Kamptee (11) and Kalamna (8). Apart from drunken driving, traffic police also acted against other violations. A total of 160 heavy vehicles were penalised for entering the city during restricted hours. Police booked 189 motorists for triple-seat riding, with the highest 31 cases in Indora zone. 
 
82 persons booked for wrong side driving 
 
Officials also issued challans to 82 drivers for driving on the wrong side and 40 motorists for dangerous driving. In Lakadganj zone, the maximum 29 cases of rash driving were recorded. “Our aim is not just enforcement but prevention of accidents and saving lives,” Matani said, “Such special drives will continue in the coming days,” he added.
