A police Head Constable was seriously injured after a speeding scooter rammed into him during a vehicle checking drive in Lakadganj area on Tuesday. Police have registered a
case of attempt to murder and arrested two youths in connection with the incident. The rider was allegedly driving the vehicle under the influence of liquor.
The injured officer has been identified as Head Constable Sanjay Geete.
The accused have been named as Rupesh Kileshwar Uike (23) and Gaurav Dnyaneshwar Chavan (21), both residents of Nandanvan slums.
According to police, PSI Pradeep Srirao, Head Constable Geete, Anil Gahlod and other personnel had set up a nakabandi at Chandrashekhar
Azad Chowk under Lakadganj Police Station limits for routine checking.
During the operation, the team noticed a scooter (MH-49/P-3959) approaching at high speed.
“When the police signaled the rider to stop, the accused panicked and deliberately drove the scooter towards the officer in an attempt to flee,” said a police official.
The scooter hit Geete, causing serious injuries. After the collision, the two youths tried to escape from the spot. However, alert police personnel chased and intercepted them within a short distance.
A senior police officer said, “Prima facie, the act appeared intentional as the rider did not slow down despite clear signals to stop. Therefore, an offence of attempt to murder has been registered.”
Geete was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. His condition is reported to be stable. Police have seized the scooter and taken both accused into custody.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact motive behind the act.
