Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to present its annual budget for the financial year 2026-27 on March 25, with a primary focus on strengthening the city’s core infrastructure. According to administrative sources, the upcoming fiscal plan will prioritise expansion of the road network, improvement of drainage systems and modernisation of existing sewerage infrastructure. To finalise the draft, a series of high-level meetings have been underway at the municipal headquarters over the past week. This year’s budget strategy appears to be shifting toward more practical and outcome-oriented financial planning. Identifying underutilised funds Municipal Commissioner Sanskriti Jain has initiated a comprehensive review of departmental spending. Preliminary assessments have identified nearly a dozen departments and budget heads that consistently receive substantial allocations but fail to utilise the funds effectively. The Commissioner has directed officials to either abolish these dormant budget heads or implement significant cuts.

The objective is to redirect this “dead money” towards urgent urban development projects, ensuring that every rupee of taxpayers’ money is utilised for visible improvements in city services. Review of past performance All departments have submitted their expenditure details for the concluding financial year (2025-26) to the Commissioner’s office. For context, the previous budget presented on April 3, 2025, had an overall outlay of Rs 3,600.79 crore. That budget had reserved 5 per cent of the revenue income (approximately Rs 110 crore) as a contingency fund. This year, the administration is striving for a better equilibrium between projected income and expenditure to minimise potential deficits. The goal is to present a more balanced financial roadmap that addresses the growing needs of the capital. Roads and water supply as priorities The upcoming budget is expected to allocate significant resources for repair and construction of city roads. Enhancing reliability of water supply across various zones is also a top priority, with several new schemes expected to be announced. The final draft of the budget is being polished and will be presented during the Municipal Council meeting on March 25. Residents of the capital are hopeful that the new fiscal provisions will lead to improved urban amenities and a more organised modern city.
