Former Director General of Police (DGP) Chhattisgarh and 1973 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Vishwa Ranjan passed away at Medanta Hospital in Patna, Bihar on Saturday night.
Deputy Chief Minister and State Home Minister Vijay Sharma has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former DGP Vishwa Ranjan.
Vijay Sharma wrote on his x, “I have received the very sad news of the demise of Shri Vishwaranjan Ji, a senior IPS officer of the 1973 batch and former DGP of Chhattisgarh. I pray to God to grant the departed soul a place in His feet and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense grief. Om Shanti.”
Vishwa Ranjan had been ill for some time and was admitted at a hospital in Patna for treatment. The news of his death was received with shock through the administrative, Police department and literary community in State.
It may be mentioned that Vishwa Ranjan was admitted to Medanta Hospital last month for cardiac problems, where he was undergoing treatment.
However, his condition worsened on Saturday night and he passed away.
Vishwa Ranjan served as
the sixth DGP of Chhattisgarh. Following the untimely demise of OP Rathore in 2007, he was appointed the head of the Chhattisgarh Police by the then Dr Raman Singh Government. He served as DGP for nearly
four years. Vishwa Ranjan, a 1973-batch IPS officer,
was called back from deputation by the Chhattisgarh Government and appointed DGP in July 2007.
Though allocated to the Chhattisgarh cadre post the Madhya Pradesh bifurcation, he had no prior posting in Chhattisgarh after the bifurcation before 2007 having spent years on long-term deputation with the Intelligence Bureau, ascending to Additional Director. A literary enthusiast, he actively organized and participated in cultural events.
