IN a tragic industrial accident reported on Sunday, a portion of an ash dyke under the Hasdeo Thermal Power Station (HTPS) in Jhabu village of Korba district collapsed, leading to the death of a JCB operator who was buried under a surge of ash slurry and debris. The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Huleshwar Kashyap. According to eyewitnesses, a sudden build-up of pressure in the ash dyke triggered a powerful outflow. Before the operator could react, the JCB machine along with Kashyap was engulfed in the rapidly flowing ash and sludge. On-site personnel immediately initiated rescue efforts; however, intensity of flow and the volume of debris hampered operations, making it impossible to save him. The body was later recovered after prolonged efforts. Upon receiving information, officials from the plant management and safety teams rushed to the spot and launched relief and rescue operations. The district administration was also informed, and efforts continued till late evening. The incident sparked widespread anger among residents of nearby villages, including Lotlota, Marhamua and Jhabu who gathered at the site and staged a protest.

 

Villagers alleged that the ash dyke had long been in a precarious condition and that repeated complaints regarding safety lapses were ignored by the authorities. They further stated that during the summer months, ash pollution severely impacts their health and daily life, and demanded strict action against those responsible for negligence. Superintending Engineer of the Civil Department, Satyendra Kumar Sahu, who reportedly assumed charge only two days ago, said he was not in a position to provide detailed information. He, however, confirmed one fatality and stated that repair work on the damaged portion of the dyke was being carried out by the concerned agency. Darri SHO Ashish Singh said that the situation at the site remains tense due to public outrage. He added that an inquiry is underway and further action will be taken based on directives from senior authorities. The incident has once again brought to the fore serious concerns regarding adherence to safety norms in industrial units. An administrative probe is expected to ascertain the exact cause of the breach and fix accountability.
