Chain reaction, 5 vehicles collide on Mandla-Barela Highway, several people injured
Staff Reporter :
A devastating multi-vehicle collision early Monday morning turned the Mandla-Barela Highway near Sharda Mandir Chowk into a scene of complete chaos. A massive chain-reaction crash involving five vehicles including a dumper (hyva), a tractor, a truck, a bus and a jeep/container trailer, left several people injured and triggered a massive traffic gridlock.
The impact of the pile-up was so severe that the vehicles were mangled into heaps of metal, causing widespread panic and screams for help from passengers and bystanders.
According to eyewitnesses, the multi-vehicle collision was triggered by a risky overtaking on a hazardous stretch of the highway. A tractor was moving ahead just a short distance from Barela entry gate. A heavy hyva (dumper truck) trailing closely behind attempted to overtake it on a steep incline.
During overtake, the hyva collided head-on with an oncoming truck. Following initial crash, a jeep following the hyva got caught in the wreckage. Concurrently, a bus and another heavy truck approaching from behind, attempted to slam on their emergency brakes but failed to stop in time, slamming into the pile-up.
Upon receiving the information, the Barela police force, led by SI Akanksha Upadhyay, rushed to the crash site alongside emergency ambulance teams. Local residents courageously teamed up with the
police to pull out trapped passengers from the mangled wreckage of the damaged vehicles.
While the initial impact caused widespread destruction, authorities have fortunately confirmed that no fatalities have been reported so far. Multiple individuals sustained injuries, with at least two confirmed severe cases. All injured victims were immediately rushed to the nearest hospital via ambulances for urgent medical treatment. The police administration remained on-site for hours to manage the severe gridlock and clear the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow on the highway.
The horrific incident has sparked intense anger among local residents and commuters against the local administration and highway authorities. The irked locals highlighted critical engineering flaws regarding this specific stretch of road, located on a hill about 20 kilometers from Jabalpur, which turned into a death zone. Despite frequent crashes, authorities have allegedly failed to install vital speed-calming measures, speed breakers, or visible warning signage.
The police have registered the case and launched a formal investigation into the matter to ascertain the exact sequence of events and any administrative lapses. SI Akanksha Upadhayay informed that two people have been confirmed critically injured in the multi-vehicle collision. The accident appears to have been caused by an attempt to overtake the tractor. A thorough investigation into the crash is currently underway.
