Jabalpur is reeling under a severe heat wave. The mercury touched 44.2 degrees Celsius on Monday and the Weather Department has warned of even harsher conditions over the next two days. Temperatures are likely to touch 45 degrees Celsius or above on May 19 and 20. A hot dry wind alert has also been issued for the region.
The intense heat has disrupted daily life across the city. People are finding it difficult to step out and carry out routine activities. Markets and public spaces wear a deserted look during afternoon hours, with most residents preferring to stay indoors. Street vendors and daily wage workers, who have no choice but to brave the heat, are among the worst affected. The weather department has advised citizens to avoid going outdoors between
12 noon and 5 pm.
The elderly, children, outdoor workers and farmers have been asked to take extra precautions.
Doctors have warned that the current conditions pose a serious risk of heat stroke. Residents have been urged to stay hydrated, wear light and loose clothing and remain indoors during
peak hours. Hospitals have reported a rise in patients complaining of dehydration, dizziness and heat-related ailments in recent days. Farmers and labourers who must work outside have been advised to take regular breaks in shaded areas and keep themselves well-hydrated. Spokesman of weather department said a Western Disturbance may become active in coming days, that may bring some relief from the heat.
