To deliberate on key issues related to agriculture and food security, the 2026 BRICS Conference is being hosted by India, and that Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has been selected as the venue for the pivotal meeting of the Agriculture Ministers. As per the concern officials, the meeting of the BRICS Agricultural Working Group (AWG) would take place in Indore from June 9 to 11, 2026, while the Agriculture Ministers from the member nations would gather there on June 12 and 13, 2026, .
Noteworthy to mention that the BRICS nations hold immense significance from an agricultural perspective, as they account for approximately 42 percent of the world’s agricultural land, 68 percent of smallholder farmers, and nearly 45 percent of global grain production.
Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chauhan stated that this conference in Indore would prove to be a historic occasion for the agricultural sector—not only for Madhya Pradesh and India but for the entire world. He emphasized that this conference, being held under India’s chairmanship and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would not only provide a new direction on critical issues such as global food security, agricultural trade, climate change, and farmer welfare but would also establish Indore as a central hub for international agricultural dialogue.
Chauhan stated that, in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, a comprehensive review of the preparations was conducted with officials, and necessary directives were issued to ensure that all arrangements are of international standards—characterized by timeliness, organization, and excellence. He emphasized that the government’s objective is not merely to host a ceremonial meeting, but to organise an impactful event that serves as a powerful showcase of India’s agricultural potential, innovation, traditions, and global leadership.
The upcoming conference in Indore will not merely be a diplomatic gathering, but a substantive platform for discourse poised to influence the global agricultural and food systems. He further informed that BRICS currently comprises 11 member nations: India, Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. Additionally, several partner nations are associated with the bloc; thus, the meeting in Indore presents a significant opportunity for broad-based international participation and multilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector.
Chauhan highlighted that India currently holds the BRICS Chairmanship for this year, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare is coordinating the activities of the BRICS Agricultural Working Group (AWG). He also underscored that two pivotal meetings of the AWG have already been successfully concluded, featuring
in-depth deliberations on further strengthening agricultural cooperation among the member nations.
Union Minister Shivraj Singh also outlined the key themes slated for discussion during the upcoming deliberations. He stated that the meeting in Indore would witness intensive brainstorming on critical subjects such as global food security and nutrition, climate-smart agriculture, trade facilitation in agriculture, farmers’ welfare, supply chain management, research and knowledge partnerships, digital agriculture, precision farming, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, robotics, and innovation.
He concluded by observing that rising temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, and the evolving climate landscape have posed new agricultural challenges for the world; therefore, developing a shared strategy focused on climate-resilient farming and sustainable agricultural systems has become the imperative of the hour.
Similarly, through agricultural trade and the exchange of best practices, farmers in member nations will discover new opportunities, and the food supply system will be rendered more stable.
Speaking in a remarkably warm and cordial manner, Chauhan stated that Indore would serve as far more than just a venue for the meeting; it would also offer a glimpse into India’s cultural soul, the renowned hospitality of the Malwa region, and the rich agricultural diversity of Madhya Pradesh. He emphasized that the guests would not be confined solely to the conference halls but would also be introduced to the historical, cultural, and agricultural traditions of Indore and its surrounding areas, thereby enabling them to truly experience the very soul of India.
He expressed his firm conviction that, drawing upon its distinctive standards of cleanliness, hospitality, organizational prowess, and cultural dignity, Indore would ensure that this event becomes an unforgettable experience. Union Minister
Shivraj Singh also recalled that the 15th meeting of BRICS Agriculture Ministers was held in Brazil in 2025, in which he himself had participated. During that meeting, India had affirmed its strong commitment to themes such as inclusive, equitable, and sustainable agriculture; the interests of small and marginal farmers; and agricultural development driven by cooperation, innovation, and fair trade.
Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, describing this occasion as a moment of pride for Madhya Pradesh, stated that this event would open new avenues of opportunity for the state’s farmers, agricultural innovations, and new technologies.
According to him, this conference would prove beneficial for both Madhya Pradesh and the nation at large, particularly in the contexts of climate change, agricultural advancement, natural farming, enhancing farmers’ incomes, and exploring the diverse possibilities associated with agriculture.
In his concluding remarks, Shivraj Singh Chauhan expressed confidence that the upcoming BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ conference in Indore would provide a new direction to India, Madhya Pradesh, and the global agricultural community. He asserted that this event would not merely be a meeting, but a historic moment marking the beginning of a new global chapter in food security, farmer welfare, agricultural cooperation, and innovation.
