A second-year engineering student allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the top of a hostel building in the campus of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Nagpur under Butibori Police Station jurisdiction, early Monday morning. According to police, the incident occurred around 4.30 am inside the institute premises. The deceased has been identified as Shreyash Chandrakant Mane (20), a native of Kolhapur. He was a second-year student of Computer Science Engineering (CSE) and was staying in the campus hostel. SDPO Bhagyashri Dhirbassi said, the student’s examination was to conclude on May 11.

However, Shreyash had already packed his bags which indicated he was preparing to leave the hostel. “As per the CCTV footage between 3 am and 4 am, he was seen going towards the lift two to three times. Later, he went up through the staircase till the ninth floor,” she said. Dhirbassi added that Shreyash had a habit of chewing gum and wrappers were found along the route up to the ninth floor, helping police trace his movement before the incident. Police officials said, they received information about the incident in the early hours, after which a team rushed to the spot. A security guard reportedly heard a loud thud and immediately went to check, where he found the student lying in a pool of blood near the hostel building.

He was declared dead at the scene. “We received information about the incident at around 4.30 am. Our team immediately reached the spot and shifted the body for post-mortem. A case of accidental death has been registered,” SDPO Dhirbassi said. The police also said, Shreyash’s mobile phone was found in the hostel room where he was staying with three roommates. He was described as a quiet person who did not interact much with others. His family members from Kolhapur arrived in Nagpur and later took the body for the last rites. “No suicide note has been recovered, so far. We are conducting a detailed inquiry to ascertain the exact reason behind the incident. All angles, including his personal and academic background, are being examined,” the officer added. Further investigation is on.
