Strong winds, thunderstorms and steady rainfall swept through Raipur and several districts of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, bringing much-needed relief from scorching heat while simultaneously triggering widespread disruptions across urban and rural pockets. The change was most visible during the afternoon hours when clear skies gave way to dense cloud cover, followed by gusty winds and sharp spells of rain. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the current weather pattern is being driven by active thunderstorm systems accompanied by gusty winds, resulting in a drop of around 1 to 2 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures across Central, North and South Chhattisgarh. Districts including Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi, Gariaband, Kanker, Korba and Bilaspur witnessed significant weather activity. While urban residents welcomed the respite from prolonged heat and humidity, the abrupt change also triggered localized disruptions. Reports of uprooted trees, damaged power lines and temporary traffic blockades emerged from several areas. In Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi, rainfall has been occurring consistently over the past three days, particularly during the afternoon. On Tuesday, a sudden spell of strong winds and rain affected weekly markets, leading to losses for small traders as goods were damaged due to exposure. Gariaband recorded unseasonal rainfall accompanied by strong winds, resulting in a noticeable drop in temperature. However, the development has raised concerns among forest-dependent communities, especially those engaged in tendu leaf collection. The region, known for tendu produce, may face disruptions if the weather pattern continues.

The Kanker district’s Charama area reported intense storm activity lasting nearly an hour, forcing residents indoors and severely affecting power supply. Electricity outages were reported in multiple localities, with fallen trees causing damage to infrastructure and property. In Bilaspur, heavy rain and wind led to panic-like conditions in parts of the city, particularly around Sirsa Chowk and Uslapur, where trees collapsed and obstructed roads. Traffic movement was affected, and power supply was disrupted in several pockets. Korba also witnessed heavy rainfall after a day of oppressive heat. While the showers brought immediate relief, recurring power outages dampened the mood, with several localities plunged into darkness. Raipur experienced similar conditions, with gusty winds and rainfall bringing down temperatures and offering a much-needed break from the heatwave-like conditions prevailing in recent days. Officials said restoration teams have been deployed to address power disruptions and clear road blockages. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph at isolated places across the state from May 6 to 9. It has also indicated that there will be no significant change in maximum temperatures over the next two days, followed by a gradual rise of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius thereafter. Raipur-based environmental activist Nitin Singhvi cautioned that “due to climate change, the intensity of storms and strong winds will increase significantly. Posters and banners get torn and fall on power lines, leading to prolonged outages. Power utilities take hours to clear them, leaving residents without electricity, especially those without backup, forced to endure heat and mosquito menace.”
