Dual track service to make metro travel faster, l Waiting time to slash by early June l Earlier it took more than an hour to begin another trip from the starting station which will now take only 25 minutes
Staff Reporter :
Commuters using the Bhopal Metro can expect significantly reduced travel and wait times by late May or early June following crucial safety inspections. Currently, operations are limited by the use of a single train running on a manual basis between AIIMS and Subhash Nagar. Because only one train is in service, it must complete its entire journey from AIIMS to Subhash Nagar, perform a U-turn, and return before starting the next round, resulting in a current wait time of approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes. However, major operational updates are on the horizon as signaling enters its final stages, according to PRO Dheeraj Shukla.
Double-track operations and safety inspections
The Commission of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is expected to conduct final tests and inspections by the end of May to finalise necessary procedural requirements. Once the CMRS provides the required clearance and signaling is fully activated, both tracks will become operational. This shift to double-track operations will drastically reduce the interval between trains to exactly 25 minutes, down from the current 65-minute wait.
These updates will lead to faster travel durations and reduced wait times at all stations, with the service upgrades expected to begin shortly after the CMRS confirms the safety of the active signaling and double tracks.
Current passenger trends and operational status
At present, the metro accommodates approximately 200 to 300 passengers on weekdays, with a 10% to 15% increase in ridership observed on weekends. While trains are currently running on a manual basis, the upcoming updates will modernise the system. According to officials, the transition to automated signaling and dual-track functionality is specifically designed to handle the increasing passenger load while providing a more efficient transit experience for the citizens of Bhopal.
AFC system and passenger concessions
In addition to the operational
improvements, the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system has been launched end April, introducing various concession packages for passengers in Bhopal and Indore. The system offers a 5% concession for those completing a round trip within a single day and a 10% discount for groups of 8 to 40 passengers traveling on a single group ticket.
Furthermore, recharging on the official ‘MP Metro’ mobile app wallet provides tiered savings, such as an 8% concession for recharges between Rs 200 and Rs 499, and up to 15% for amounts between Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,000. Passengers can opt for Paper QR tickets at counters or Mobile QR tickets via the app, though officials clarified that wallet balances are non-refundable and dedicated solely to metro travel.
