Nagpur girls basketball team won both their league round matches to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 51st Maharashtra State Sub-Junior Basketball Championship which began in Satara on Wednesday.
In their tournament opener, the U-13 Nagpur girls defeated Aurangabad 58-15 to kick start their campaign with a bang. The selection tournament is organised by the Maharashtra State Basketball Association (MSBA).
In the opening match, skipper Sara Gulalkari top scored with 19 points while Netra Damke (13), Krutika Sathawane (10), Misthi Rakhade (4) and Vaishnavi Pal (4) supported well as Nagpur defeated Aurangabad by 43 points.
The quarter-wise scores read 9-2, 10-3, 16-6, 23-4.
In the second match, Nagpur girls defeated Thane 55-27 to register their successive victory and qualify for the quarter-finals. For Nagpur, Netra Damke top scored with 19 points while Krutika Sathawane (14), Sara Gulalkari (13) and Misthi Rakhade (4) played well. The quarter-wise scores in Nagpur’s favour read
5-6, 21-9, 15-7, 14-5.
Eariler in the boys section, Nagpur team lost their quarterfinal match against hosts Satara 37-52 to make an early exit from the championship.
In the league round, Nagpur boys started their campaign with a 24-20 victory over Mumbai Central. In the second match, Nagpur lost 23-67 against Mumbai North. In the third league match, Nagpur boys suffered a close 27-29 defeat against Mumbai South East to finish third in the group and quaify for the quarter-finals where they lost against Satara to crash out of the tournament.
