THE Chhattisgarh
Environment Conservation
Board (CECB) has been continuously monitoring the environmental compliance of
industrial units operating within the Raipur region. Through
surprise inspections conducted by its Regional Office,
Raipur, the Board has been taking strict action against industries found violating environmental standards under the Air
(Prevention and Control of
Pollution) Act, 1981, and the
Water (Prevention and Control
of Pollution) Act, 1974.
Between January 2025 and
May 2026, extensive enforcement actions were carried
out against industries located
in Raipur, Baloda BazarBhatapara, Dhamtari,
Mahasamund, and Gariaband
districts under the jurisdiction
of the Regional Office, Raipur.
During this period, notices were
issued to 94 polluting industries,
while directions for closure of
operations or disconnection of
electricity supply were issued
against 82 industries.
Environmental compensation amounting to Rs
2,40,65,125 was imposed on 96
industries during the same period. Additionally, environmental compensation totaling Rs
51,02,323 was levied on 136
industries and institutions for
transporting raw materials,
finished products, and solid
waste without covering them
with tarpaulin. Furthermore,
environmental compensation
of Rs 12 lakh was imposed on
two industries for unauthorised
transportation and dumping of
fly ash without prior approval.
Under the Government of
India’s notified Plastic Waste
Management Amendment
Rules, 2021, and the State
Government’s Chhattisgarh
Plastic and Other NonBiodegradable Material Rules,
2023, the manufacture, storage,
sale, transportation, and use of
single-use plastic and other
prohibited plastic products
remain banned.
In this regard, between January 2025 and May 2026, the Regional
Office, Raipur, ordered the closure of one industry and imposed
environmental compensation of Rs 87,500. A legal complaint was
also filed against the concerned industry in court. Another industry was directed to cease production and was imposed environmental compensation of Rs 6,25,000. In addition, closure actions
were taken against two other industries for violations of the prescribed regulations.
To ensure continuous monitoring of ambient air quality in Raipur
city, four Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations
(CAAQMS) equipped with display boards and six National Ambient
Air Monitoring Programme (NAMP) stations are currently operational. The average Air Quality Index (AQI) of Raipur city was recorded at 65.38 in 2024, which declined to 62.86 in 2025, reflecting an
improvement of approximately 4 percent in air quality.
This level
falls within the satisfactory category and demonstrates the positive
outcomes of ongoing pollution control measures and sustained environmental management efforts.
The Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Board has reiterated that strict action will continue against industries violating environmental norms. The Board remains committed to strengthening
monitoring and enforcement activities to ensure a clean, healthy,
and sustainable environment across the State.
