High-velocity winds

A potent combination of active regional weather systems and atmospheric disturbances triggered widespread severe weather leading to heavy downpours, violent dust storms, intense lightning, and severe hailstorms in multiple districts, drastically bringing down temperatures across the State. According to the Meteorological Centre, Bhopal, a western disturbance persisting as a cyclonic circulation over North Pakistan, combined with an induced circulation over Jammu and a targeted cyclonic circulation over southeast Rajasthan and adjoining western Madhya Pradesh, fuelled this massive instability. Meanwhile, southwest monsoon conditions continue to advance favourably across the central Arabian Sea and parts of neighbouring states, shifting regional wind dynamics. The State witnessed severe weather fluctuations over the past day, with intense convective activity generating high-velocity gusty winds. Sehore recorded a furious maximum wind speed of 91 km/h, followed closely by Bhopal at 59 km/h, Guna and Ashoknagar at 50 km/h, and Mandsaur at 48 km/h. Violent dust storms swept through Bhopal, Dewas, Khargone, Jabalpur, and Sehore, while destructive hailstorms pounded Bhopal, Dewas, Jhabua, and Shajapur districts. Monsoon-like downpours drenched various pockets of the State, with rainfall recorded at most places in the Ujjain division and at many places across the Bhopal division.

Badnagar recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 58.0 mm, followed by Sailana at 50.0 mm and Kolar at 40.0 mm. The widespread storm activity and heavy cloud cover caused a substantial drop in temperatures, offering residents dramatic relief from the intense summer heat. While there were no massive statistical shifts in day temperatures compared to the immediate previous days, they remained remarkably below normal. Day temperatures plummeted markedly below normal by up to 5°C in the Chambal division and were appreciably below normal by 3.4°C in the Rewa division. The lowest maximum temperature was recorded at the hill station of Amarkantak at 33.7°C, whereas the highest maximum temperature in the State peaked at 42.5°C in Nowgong (Chhatarpur). Night and early morning temperatures fell appreciably by 2.3°C to 3.9°C across Indore, Ujjain, and Chambal, with Pachmarhi recording the lowest minimum temperature in the state at a cool 18.2°C, while Chitrakoot registered the highest minimum at 29.0°C. The Weather Department indicates that the blistering heat wave conditions will remain checked for the time being, with no large changes expected in maximum temperatures over the next three days, followed by a gradual rise of 2°C to 3°C across the State.

Orange warnings for isolated hailstorms, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching 50–60 km/h have been issued for Mandsaur, Neemuch, Chhindwara, and Seoni. Similar high-velocity winds and thunderstorms are expected in Ashoknagar, Shivpuri, Sheopur, Damoh, and Sagar, while a broader yellow alert for 40–50 km/h winds covers a wide geographical belt including Raisen, Sehore, Narmadapuram, Indore, Ujjain, Dewas, Gwalior, Jabalpur, and Pandhurna, leaving the remaining districts dry. The State capital, Bhopal, experienced a dramatic weather turnaround characterised by volatile storms and significant atmospheric cooling. The city was battered by gusty winds reaching up to 59 km/h, accompanied by a heavy dust storm and a severe hailstorm that swept through the district. This intense convective activity resulted in 21.1 mm of rainfall recorded at the main city station, while the Arera Hills observatory logged a higher downpour of 29.8 mm, causing the morning relative humidity to surge to a saturated 95%. Consequently, temperatures plummeted well below seasonal expectations; the city’s maximum temperature reached 37.4°C (3.8°C below normal), while the minimum temperature dropped to a comfortable 20.2°C, marking a significant departure of 7.2°C below normal.

Looking ahead, Bhopal and its neighbourhood are expected to maintain a partly cloudy sky with persistent thunderstorms, lightning, and light rain, driven by average wind speeds of 16 to 18 km/h, with temperatures hovering between a maximum of 36°C and a minimum of 22°C.
