A single heavy spell of 70.6 mm rainfall shattered the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) claims of monsoon preparedness. Widespread waterlogging across residential colonies, major arterial roads, and underpasses has exposed severe gaps in the civic body’s annual maintenance and structural engineering networks.
While the civic body executed water extraction operations using high-capacity pumps at Narendra Nagar Underpass, other crucial underground channels continue to struggle. Chronic hotspots like Manish Nagar, Mankapur, and Loha Pul accumulated knee-level water, completely disrupting transit routes. Addressing the recurring crisis at Loha Pul, Dr Vipin Itankar, Municipal Commissioner during a site inspection recently had issued a directive to railway officials to deliver a solution within a week.
Nullah wall construction and desilting flaws
To reinforce the city’s drainage channels, the NMC has pushed forward with the construction of defensive compound walls inside major nullahs, notably on the stretch behind Wockhardt Hospital in Dharampeth.
In several areas, major streams remain choked with thick accumulations of water hyacinths, blocking natural flow of stormwater. This structural failure resulted in severe waterlogging in Zingabai Takli, Gorewada, Ekta Colony, and Kamgar Colony, forcing emergency teams to deploy motor pumps to drain inundated households.
Pothole repair drive faces public skepticism
Simultaneously, the city’s road networks remain heavily compromised, compounding
traffic hazards.
Commenting on the ongoing road maintenance operations, an engineer from the Hot Mix Department stated, “The pothole repair drive remains functional throughout the year, but this specialised pre-monsoon drive is currently under process.” Despite these administrative assurances, residents in the western and north-western parts of Nagpur report a grim reality.
Emergency services
on high alert
The intense downpour kept the Fire and Emergency Services Department on high alert from 9 pm on Wednesday to 12 am on Friday, responding to 20 emergency calls.
These included four waterlogging interventions and 16 urgent tree-fall incidents. Rescue crews worked round-the-clock to clear uprooted trees blocking vital thoroughfares in Civil Lines, Gandhibagh, Dattaji Nagar, Rajabaksha, Abhyankar Nagar, and the district court premises. On Untkhana Road, firefighters successfully cleared a large fallen tree that had crushed a parked two-wheeler, safely restoring gridlocked traffic lines.
Based on recent municipal assessments and ground-level feedback, Ankit, the Municipal Additional Commissioner of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), shared a comprehensive update regarding the ongoing
Pre-monsoon and monsoon
preparedness drives across
the city.
He clarified a common misconception regarding the Hot Mix Department’s operations, noting that while the regular plant is temporarily paused during heavy rain, a new approach is underway. “Our Hot Mix plant is functional, but we do not use hot mix during the rainy season because it does not sustain on wet roads. To resolve this, the department has identified a cold mix solution that will be trailed to effectively clear chronic potholes even amidst monsoon showers,” he stated.
Addressing the extensive desilting works, he explained that the NMC had systematically utilised advanced suction jetting machines to clean internal drains and clear structural blockages across major water channels.
While operations are
largely complete, continuous silt deposition requires recurring interventions, which the civic body is monitoring directly via its grievance app and localised social media inputs.
