A
DAM Driver is officially entering the
Marvel Cinematic Universe - and not
as Magneto. The Star Wars and
Marriage Story star will play supervillain
Mister Sinister in Marvel Studios’ upcoming
X-Menreboot,whileObsessionbreakoutInde
Navarrette has been cast as Rogue.
The new cast members were announced by
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige during
Disney’s D23 presentation recently,
alongside Driver’s Girls co-star Christopher
Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier and Maya
Boyd as Storm. The film is scheduled to hit theatres in May 2028.
Driver’s casting had been the subject of
months of speculation, with the actor
frequently linked to the X-Men franchise.
Magneto was widely believed to be the role he
would take on. During the D23 presentation at
Anaheim’s Honda Center, the rest of the cast
appeared on stage before Driver joined them
virtually on a giant screen.
“Kevin and I had been talking for years about
my joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and
I thinkwe finally found the perfect film,”Driver
told the audience of nearly 12,000.He then jokingly announced that he was “very excited” to
play Magneto, before pausing and correcting
himself:
“Evenbetter,NathanielMillbury,”referring to the alias used by Mister Sinister.
Also joining the reboot are previously
announced cast members Samara Weaving as
Emma Frost, Kit Connor as Scott “Cyclops”
Summers and Sadie Sink as Jean Grey. Sink’scasting was confirmed through her appearance in
Spider-Man: Brand New Day earlier this
summer.
Interestingly, thenewly assembledX-Mencast
members were meeting one another for the first
time backstage at the D23 event.
“They’ve just met backstage for the very first
time,” Feige told the crowd.
Navarrette, meanwhile, had also been the subject of intense casting speculation after attracting attention for her performance in the indie
horror film Obsession. Her casting as Rogue marks
another major step for the rising actor.
There boot became possible after Disney’s 2019
acquisition of 21st Century Fox, bringing the film
rights to the X-Men back under the same corporate umbrella as Marvel Studios.
Jake Schreier, known for The Fantastic Four:
First Steps, is directing the reboot. The screenplay is being developed by Beef creator Lee Sung
Jin and The Bear co-show runner Joanna Calo.
With a fresh ensemble, a new director and the
X-Men finally joining the MCU, Marvel is preparing to give one of its most beloved mutant franchises an entirely new beginning.
