A NEARLYeight-decade-old tradition of worshipping the ‘King of Bhopal’ continues to hold a special place in the city’s religious and cultural landscape, with Sarafa Bazaar once again turning into a major centre of devotion during Ganesh Utsav. The historic tradition of installing Lord Ganesh in Sarafa Bazaar, located in the old city, has been continuing for nearly 80 years, according to the organisers. Despite the passage of generations, the celebrations continue to be marked by traditional rituals, elaborate decorations and large-scale community participation. This year too, the Sarafa Bazaar Traders’ Association has given the tableau a grand appearance. The imposing idol of Lord Ganesh is installed on a silver throne and adorned with a silver crown and silver ornaments, making it a major attraction for devotees. Before the installation, the idol is ceremonially purified through traditional rituals. Once the festivities begin, thousands of devotees are expected to visit the tableau each day to offer prayers and seek the blessings of Lord Ganesh. Devotees arrive from across the region: The organisers said the popularity of the ‘King of Bhopal’ extends beyond the city, with devotees from surrounding areas and distant places also visiting Sarafa Bazaar during the festival. The celebrations are not limited to worship. A significant emphasis is also placed on prasad distribution and community service, making the annual event an important occasion for social participation.

 

Around 100 kg prasad prepared daily:According to the organisers, nearly 100 kg of prasad is prepared every day at Agarwal Pathshala during Ganesh Utsav. Special arrangements are made to distribute the prasad among devotees visiting the tableau. The organisers further said that (56 Bhog)offerings are made to Lord Ganesh every day during the festival, requiring the preparation of large quantities of prasad. 200 kg fruit to be distributed: A special Fruit Festival is also planned as part of the celebrations. Around 200 kg of fruits will be distributed among devotees and needy people, according to the organisers. The initiative reflects the festival’s emphasis on service and sharing, alongside religious devotion. 325 kg laddus to be offered on 10th day: The tenth day of the festival will feature a special havan and other religious rituals. The organisers said approximately 325 kg of laddus will be offered to Lord Ganesha on the occasion. The laddus will subsequently be distributed as prasad among devotees. Deepak Goyal, associated with the Sarafa Bazaar Traders’ Association, said the tradition of installing the King of Bhopal has continued for approximately eight decades. He added that the tableau attracts thousands of devotees every day during Ganesh Utsav. From its traditional rituals to community service and large-scale prasad distribution, the Sarafa Bazaar celebration continues to preserve a distinctive part of Bhopal’s religious heritage, connecting the city’s present generation with a tradition that has endured for decades.
