AFTER a series of heartbreaks in 2025 and early 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has taken a mighty leap by successfully launching EOS-05 satellite which is India’s first-ever imaging satellite placed in the geo-orbit. The successful launch has handed India a strategic advantage in monitoring large areas with a dedicated satellite and at the same time injected a fresh energy in ISRO to overcome anomalies in its earlier failed launches.
The ‘Eye in the sky’ is not a “spy satellite” as people and many countries would like to look at the EOS-05 but it will be a major help in persistent, high-frequency observation of large regions of the country rather than relying only on periodic satellite revisits.
This is very critical for India to have a dedicated satellite providing real-time imagery which can be turned into actionable intelligence in sectors of immense importance.
India has several active earth observation satellites in the lower-earth orbits. They circle Earth and capture imagery over India at periodic intervals. However, in the geosynchronous orbit, the EOS-05 satellite will remain stationary relative to Earth and will continuously watch the same region without gaps. It will hover at an altitude of roughly 36,000 kms above Earth and will match Earth’s rotational speed.
The imaging satellite will be extremely valuable in tracking rapidly evolving weather systems, floods and other natural threats including forest fires.
With continuous monitoring of large regions, including areas which are strategically vulnerable, the satellite data will come handy in taking precautionary measures in case of extreme weather events unfolding and also implement mitigation measures to save human lives and property. Apart from disaster management, the imaging satellite will also be useful in monitoring agriculture and natural resources. Being an agrarian economy, solid data from a dedicated satellite can become a game-changer in determining cropping patterns and opting for climate-resilient crops.
Though the EOS-05 is not exactly a “spy satellite”, it can strengthen situation awareness for the armed forces across India’s land and maritime domains. Real-time imagery would be of immense importance for the defence planners as India is handling two hot borders with China and Pakistan and a porous front with Bangladesh.
With India increasing its naval monitoring in the Indian Ocean Region, real-time images from EOS-05 can come handy in patrolling and detecting “research vessels” owing allegiance to China. It is a real opportunity for India to use the satellite data into actionable intelligence through private and geospatial ecosystems.
Looking at the satellite launch from the security point of view, India has achieved a major breakthrough in using space tech to plan future warfare. Real-time inputs were used by Pakistan with the help of Chinese satellites during Operation Sindoor. India quickly changed its tactics to defeat the strategy but also realised the advantage of having its own “Eye in the sky” in case of further such limited conflicts. With the geographical advantage of monitoring large regions from space continuously, the EOS-05 will be a vital weapon in detecting activities inimical to India at the borders as well as near the border. Against this background, the launch of EOS-5 is a major milestone for the Indian space industry.
